Towards a Pollution-Free Planet: North American Multi-Stakeholder Consultation in advance of the United Nations Environment Assembly
Pollution damages human health and impairs natural ecosystems.
Pollution damages human health and impairs natural ecosystems.
Around the world, over 12.6 million deaths are attributable to pollution and environmental degradation annually, while economic losses from pollution add up to an estimated USD$5 trillion each year. To address global pollution concerns, UN Environment will gather environmental leaders at the United Nations Environment Assembly in December in Nairobi, Kenya. The UN Environment Assembly, the world's highest-level decision-making body on the environment, will deliver tangible commitments to address pollution of air, land, waterways and oceans.
In advance of third session of the Environment Assembly, the UN Environment North America cordially invites you to a multi-stakeholder regional consultation entitled "Towards a Pollution-Free Planet" on Thursday, October 26, in Toronto, Ontario. Hosted by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, the consultation will feature expert speakers who will address the human and economic costs of pollution while highlighting opportunities for policy change at the national and sub-national level. Panels will be followed by an active discussion to solicit inputs for key messages that will be presented at the Environment Assembly.
In the lead up to the Assembly, UN Environment is inviting voluntary commitments from governments, businesses, and the public to address pollution. We also encourage you to sign the Clean Planet Pledge to take actions to reduce your pollution footprint.
