Government of Canada announces $1.7M for IISD Experimental Lakes Area

On August 10, 2016, the Government of Canada, Department of Fisheries and Oceans pledged to fund IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) $1.7M over the next two years.
The announcement took place at the Lake of the Woods Discovery Centre in Kenora. The Honourable Bob Nault, Member of Parliament for Kenora, on behalf of the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, made the announcement. Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister and IISD-ELA Executive Director Matt McCandless also made remarks.
IISD-ELA gratefully welcomes this funding from the Government of Canada, which will help continue vital freshwater research for years to come. The $850,000 per year will go towards operational costs, primarily towards researcher and technician salaries (as well as supplies and equipment); facility costs, such as staff accommodations; and database technology and maintenance. IISD will continue to operate the site and determine the focus of the research, educational and outreach activities.
